THE COLOUR is a sinister green and it tastes and looks like lawn clippings. Yet growing numbers of people are stirring a hard-to-get powder called Green Magic into their orange juice and gulping it down.
And when they’re not stirring or gulping, they’re raving about how wonderful it is. But if you ask its fans what they’re drinking, they’ll need to take a deep breath. The list is long.
It includes most of the buzzy health foods of the Nineties; the nutrients which we might once have found in our greens. According to the manufacturers, New Spirit Naturals, Green Magic is a super-food, a wonderfully rich source of vitamins, enzymes and bowel-friendly bacteria.
Drink it regularly, they suggest, and you need never steam another head of broccoli or chop another spinach leaf. The recipe includes blue green algae (spirulina and chlorella); the juices of barley and wheat grasses; wheat sprouts; royal jelly (the nectar which turns ordinary female bees into Queens); sea vegetables (Norwegian kelp and Nova Scotia dulse); soya lecithin; rice kernel membrane powder; apple pectin; Jerusalem artichoke powder; antioxidant enzymes (including co-enzyme Q10) and micro-organisms which improve the intestinal flora (lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus bacterium).
Green Magic is made by drying whole foods, rather than extracting individual nutrients, which probably explains the grassy blast. Dr Ken West, an American sports scientist who has worked with the England cricket team and Arsenal, takes Green Magic and recommends it for athletes he advises. He explained: “We’re all told to eat five servings of fruit and veg a day, but most people manage only two. Green Magic covers the other three and helps detoxify thhe body of substances we weren’t designed to ingest, such as caffeine and alcohol.”
It is a rich source of B vitamins and beta-carotene. Dr West added: “I take one scoop of it a day and that keeps me going for seven hours. If I start to get cranky and tired during a heavy day, I take another. “I think it works by boosting energy and the immune system.
